About MAYDENA

Maydena is a village in the Derwent Valley Region of Tasmania, approximately 87 km west of Hobart, the State capital. Like the small settlements to its north-east, Fitzgerald and Tyenna, Maydena is surrounded by the Mount Field National Park, a 158.81 km sq area proclaimed a national park, in 1916.

The park has become one of the State’s most popular and can be enjoyed by visitors of all ages and levels of fitness. While many of its walks require a reasonably high level of fitness, some of its highlights, such as the Russell Falls, are easily accessible to both the less mobile and to visitors in wheelchairs.

Near the park is the Styx Valley, an old-growth forest area much fought over by environmentalists and the timber industry. The valley contains some of the nation’s tallest trees, including impressive examples of Eucalyptus Regnans (alternatively known as Tasmanian Oak, Mountain Ash and Swamp or Stringy) Gum, which are the world’s tallest flowering plants, not uncommonly attaining heights of 90 metres or more.

The area also abounds in native Tasmanian fauna, including platypi and koalas, and the area around Russell Falls is illuminated in the evening by the light of hundreds of glow-worms. The region was one of the last known habitats for the thylacine (or Tasmanian tiger), now presumed to be extinct, the last example in captivity having been captured near Maydena in 1933.

Also near Maydena is the Junee Florentine cave system, the deepest in Australia. The caves are also considered by speleologists and cavers to be among the most difficult to explore. The Junee River, having travelled underground for about 30 km, spectacularly emerges form one of the cave mouths as a waterfall.
