New Norfolk is a town in the Derwent Valley Region of Tasmania. Considered the unofficial “capital of the Derwent Valley, it is situated on the Derwent River approximately 35 km north-west of the Tasmanian capital, Hobart.

The town’s name commemorates its origins, its first settlers having come from Norfolk Island in the early 19th century to farm this fertile area. Hops quickly became an important crop in the district and one of the remaining oast houses – farm buildings in which hops are dried before being sent on to breweries – has become a museum preserving that part of the town’s heritage. The Oast House Hop Museum is also a gift shop, craft market and restaurant.

A classified historic town, New Norfolk has many fine examples of early Australian architecture. Combining the best of all worlds, it claims to be home to both Australia’s longest continually functioning church – Saint Matthew’s – parts of which date back to 1832, and the nation’s Australia’s oldest continually run licensed hotels – the Bush Inn Hotel – which was built in 1815 and became licensed premises ten years later. The Inn is also distinguished by having been the location of the first trunk telephone call made from Australia and having a font, left by a Methodist preacher in the 1830s, at part of its décor.

The area around New Norfolk is home to a wide range of agricultural curiosities, such as Rosedown Cottage Gardens (a four and a half acre, dedicated to roses, daffodils, lilacs and other traditional European blooms), the Olmec Alpaca farm, and Salmon Ponds, an historic trout and salmon hatchery in nearby Plenty.

In contrast to New Norfolk’s air of historical tranquility, another diversion in the area are jet boat tours of the Derwent River, including its rapids, during which the craft can reach speeds of 80 kmph.
