About CRADLE MOUNTAIN

Cradle Mountain, in the Devonport and Cradle Mountain Region of northern Tasmania, is one of the State’s most popular tourist destinations. It is located in the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park which occupies around 1612 km sq of alpine heathland and rainforest growth, and about 165 km north-west of the Tasmanian capital, Hobart.

Cradle Mountain itself is composed of dolerite columns and rises to a maximum height of 1,545 m at two peaks, the first simply called Cradle Mountain and the second, Smithies Peak. It also has two subpeaks: Weindorfers Tower (1,459 m) and Little Horn (1,355 m). Cradle Mountain rises above three glacially formed lakes: Lake Wilks, Crater Lake (named for its similarity to volcanic lakes) and, the largest, Dove Lake.

A number of walking paths have been made through the park from the easy trail around the circumference of Dove Lake, which takes around two hours to complete, to the Overland Track, an 80 km path stretching from Cradle Mountain to Lake St Clair, the deepest lake in Australia, which has a maximum depth of 200 metres. The Overland Track also takes hardy walkers past Mount Ossa, Tasmania’s highest mountain, the summit of which is 1,614 m above sea level. On average, the Overland Track takes walkers between five and six days to complete.

Cradle Mountain, like Mount Ossa, is climbed by many visitors to the park, although it is a fairly demanding ascent, requiring the clambering over boulders for much of the time. The round trip takes fairly fit climbers between six and a half to seven and a half hours, but the views from the peak reputedly reward the effort.

The national park is home to a wide range of native animals such as wombats, brush-tail possums and pademelons. The quiet and patient may also see a Tasmanian devil in the wild or platypi in the cold streams and lakes.

Visitors may also choose to explore this beautiful area by canoe or mountain bikes or on horseback.
