About DEVONPORT

Devonport is the largest city in the Devonport and Cradle Mountain Region of northern Tasmania. Located at the mouth of the Mersey River, Devonport was formed through the amalgamation of the towns of Formby, on the Mersey’s western side, and Torquay, on the east, in 1890. (Torquay maintained a certain degree of independence, however, and is now called East Devonport.) It took another 91 years until the merged town was proclaimed a city.

For those visitors who cross the Bass Strait from Melbourne on the Spirit of Tasmania passenger and vehicular ferries, Devonport is their port of disembarkment. The city also has an airport 7 km from its centre, with four flights a day travelling between Devonport and Melbourne.

Besides its role as a port, Devonport is a centre for the local farming community – the surrounding countryside produces around 40% of Tasmania’s vegetables – for the tourist industry. Conveniently located for visitors wishing to explore either northern Tasmania’s seaside resorts or the spectacular inland countryside, such as the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park.

The city also has many attractions of its own. Beside the natural beauties of its coastline, Devonport has a range of museums that are popular with visitors. The Tiagarra Aboriginal Culture Centre and Museum was built on Mersey Bluff in 1976 to protect some of the few rock paintings made by the original Tasmanians. It also houses more than 2,000 artifacts of that culture.

Other museums and galleries in Devonport include: the Tasmanian Maritime Museum, which houses a large collection of historic items, paintings and beautifully executed ship models; the Devonport Regional Gallery’s collection of work by Tasmanian artists; and Imaginarium Science Centre, which exhibits more than fifty interactive displays, exploring science and technology. To the west of the town the Don River Railway maintains the State’s largest collection of steam locomotives and passenger carriages.
