About FORTH

Forth is a village on the Forth River, around 11 km to the west of the city of Devonport in northern Tasmania’s Devonport and Cradle Mountain Region.

The village, previously named as Hamilton-on-Forth, was the initial port in the area but due to the river mouth’s tendency to become silted up, the mouth of the nearby Mersey River was considered more suitable, and Devonport grew from that relocation.

The Forth River, named after a river in Scotland, rises in the Central Plateau, near Mount Pelion West, and passes through three hydroelectric power stations, before reaching Forth and its mouth between the two small settlements of Turners Beach on the western side and Leith on the east.

The area around the river mouth can best be viewed from Braddon’s Lookout. The Forth River attracts anglers to the area with good numbers of mullet and salmon to be reeled in.

The quiet village of Forth gets a little less quiet once a year when it hosts the Jack Daniel's Forth Valley Blues Festival in March.

The festival, established in 1998, is held on the riverside Forth Recreation Ground and attracts performers from all over Tasmania and the mainland, as well as international blues performers from the US, Britain, New Zealand and even Japan.
