About PORT SORELL

Port Sorell is a small town situated on the estuary of the Rubicon River, about 20 km east of Devonport, in the Devonport and Cradle Mountain Region of northern Tasmania. Its closest towns are Shearwater, a slightly more commercial and modernized district, and Hawley Beach slightly nearer the ocean on the western shores of the estuary, and Squeaking point further upstream.

The settlement was originally named Burgess and was a port for sealing and fishing vessels. In 1822, it was renamed in honour of William Sorell, the then Lieutenant-Governor of Van Diemen’s Land (as Tasmania was known until 1856) and grew to become one of the principal ports on the northern coast. Its growth was, however, hampered by bushfires, and Devonport replaced it in importance as a port.

The town is now a quiet one, with a population of about 2,200. However, in the summer months, visitors wishing for a quiet seaside holiday significantly boost the numbers. The main attractions in the area are boating (including kayaking), water-skiing, and fishing, the town’s jetty being a favourite area for anglers.

Across the estuary is a 43.5 km sq reserve called Narawntapu National Park (originally the Asbestos Range National Park), which is home to so many species of native animals that local publicity refers to it as “Tasmania’s Serengeti”. Reasonably common animals such as Bennetts wallabies, pademelons and wombats are residents, but visitors may also view rarer creatures such as Tasmanian devils and Forester kangaroos foraging on the plains.

Bird-watchers gravitate to the Springlawn area of the park and the lagoons, where an extremely diverse range of birds can be viewed, from wrens and robins to herons, swans, cormorants and even the rare wedge-tailed eagles and white-bellied sea eagles. Little (or Fairy) penguins are also seen on Port Sorell’s seafront at dusk.
