Devonport, located at the mouth of the Mersey River, is the largest city in the north-western portion of the State, and is primarily known to visitors to Tasmania as the port for the Spirit of Tasmania ferries, Spirit I and II, which travel between the port and Melbourne.
The area was first surveyed in 1823 and became known, first, as Port Frederick, then as Mersey River. Later, it became two separate towns - Formby on the western side, and Torquay on the east – which eventually merged to become Devonport in 1890. The eastern side is now called East Devonport.
Inland, the Mersey River is popular with devotees of white-water rafting.
Twenty km east of Devonport, at the mouth of the Rubicon River, is Port Sorell, a one-time fishing and sealing port which may have eclipses Devonport in its size had it not been troubled with bushfires which have destroyed most evidence of the town’s history. As it is, the town is a quiet resort popular with fishermen.
Further east is the Narawntapu National Park (formerly known as Asbestos Range National Park), which so abounds with native wildlife that it has been locally nicknamed “Tasmania’s Serengeti”.
Inland, in the southern portion of the region, is Cradle Mountain - Lake St Clair National Park. The park contains many walking trails, most well known of which is the Overland Track. Major features of the park are Lake St Clair and to the north, Cradle Mountain. This park is part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.
Rising to 1,545 m above sea level, Cradle Mountain is one of the principal tourist sites in Tasmania. The mountain, composed of dolerite columns, rises above the glacially formed Dove Lake (934 m), Lake Wilks, and Crater Lake.
