About BICHENO

Bicheno is a popular tourist destination on the coast of Tasmania’s East Coast and Freycinet Region, about 185 north-east of the State capital Hobart. The area was settled by Europeans at the beginning of the 19th century when the future town of Bicheno was a small harbour used by sealers and whalers.

The settlement was known for a time as Waub’s Harbour, in honour of an Aboriginal woman, Waubedebar, who, though abducted from her people by a sealer wanting female companionship, is said to have rescued two Europeans from drowning at sea during a storm. The town was subsequently renamed in honour of James Ebenezer Bicheno, colonial secretary of Van Diemen’s Land (as Tasmania was known until 1856) from 1843 to 1851, but Waubedebar’s grave can still be visited in Bicheno’s Lions Park.

Briefly a coal port in the mid-19th century, Bicheno has been a quiet fishing village for most of its subsequent history until its reputation for beautiful beaches and excellent fishing spread sufficiently for tourism to become a major part of the town’s economy. The harbour is still home to many fishing vessels, with trevally, crayfish, scallops and abalone all being found in generous numbers in the surrounding waters.

The area has a number of other natural attractions, such as a dramatic blow hole, the “Rocking Rock” (a massive granite boulder balanced precariously enough for the motion of the sea to rock it backwards and forth), and a lively population of Little (or Fairy) penguins. Many of the penguins nest on Diamond Island, an off-shore nature reserve to which visitors can walk during low tide.

On the northern side of Bicheno is the East Coast Birdlife and Animal Park where a large range of native creatures can be admired, while right by the ocean is the Sea Life Centre, an aquarium and restaurant.
