Situated at the base of the Freycinet Peninsula, about 125 km north-east of the Tasmanian capital, Hobart, Coles Bay is a small fishing and tourist centre in the State’s East Coast and Freycinet Region. The nearest town to the magnificent Freycinet National Park, Coles Bay is located among pristine white beaches and dramatic cliffs and peaks of red and pink granite. Unsurprisingly, it has become a popular tourist destination in its own right.

The peninsula is named in honour of the French explorer, Louis de Freycinet, part of an expedition to sail around the south and south-western coasts of Tasmania in the early years of the 19th century.

The town nestles at the foot of a jagged, granite mountain range called the Hazards (so named not because of any especial dangers they present, but supposedly in memory of a whaling captain who delighted in the name Richard ‘Black’ Hazard).

Along with Mount Field National Park in the south central area of the State, Freycinet National Park is the one of Tasmania’s two oldest national parks, having been established in 1916. It is also one of Tasmania’s most popular, with one of its beaches, Wineglass Bay, frequently appearing in lists of the world’s top ten beaches.

Around a kilometre from the southern tip of the peninsula, where Mount Freycinet rises to a height of 620 m, lies Schouten Island, a secluded spot with some exceptional beaches and crystalline waters that makes an idyllic home for its population of fur seals. Enthusiastic visitors to Coles Bay kayak out to the island, but happily the town also caters to the less energetic and charter tours to Schouten Island are available, with diversions to go whale and dolphin spotting as part of the package.

In keeping with the eco-tourism policy of much of Tasmania, Coles Bay has the distinction of being Australia’s first plastic bag free town.
