About SCAMANDER

Scamander is a small resort town at the northernmost part of the East Coast and Freycinet Region of Tasmania, about 235 km from the State capital, Hobart. It is situated at the mouth of the Scamander River about midway between the larger town of St Helens in the north and the village of St Marys in the south.

The area was first visited by Europeans in 1825, when prolific explorer and surveyor John Helder Wedge named the area Yarmouth and the river, the Borthwick. The river was subsequently renamed Hanson’s Creek, and eventually both it and the town were given the name Scamander.

The district’s exceptional beaches and ocean views encouraged tourism from a very early period, the first Scamander Hotel opening its doors to visitors to the village in the late 1890s. Today this tradition continues to flourish as tourists are drawn to the region for its surfing, swimming and boating. Both beach and river fishing are also very good around Scamander, the river being particularly rich in bream around the estuary and trout further inland.

The river is also connected to one of the town’s more curious historical misadventures, since for one reason or another, the Scamander was exceptionally unlucky with its bridges from 1865 to 1929, losing the first to poor construction, several to floods, and others to shipworms, a type of bivalve mollusc that bores into and severely damages submerged timber.

After losing the last timber bridge in 1929, the town gave up temporarily and settled on a punt, but in a truss bridge was built in 1936 and, subsequently, a concrete one alongside it. Happily not even the destructive bushfires that swept the town in late 2006 undermined either bridge.

Two km south of the town is the Winifred Curtis Scamander Reserve, a 75 ha reserve that is home to more than three hundred species of plants, including a wide range of wild flowers, and more than eighty species of birds.
