Swansea is a small town on the north-western shore of Great Oyster Bay, opposite the Freycinet Penisnula, in Tasmania’s beautiful East Coast and Freycinet Region. It is approximately 134 km from the State capital, Hobart, and is more or less opposite Coles Bay, the nearest town to the peninsula and its spectacular national park.

The area’s first European settlement occurred during the 1820s, making it one of the oldest settlements in the State, and many buildings from its pioneer days still stand and still house thriving businesses. The two upper storeys of the three-storey Morris’s General Store are built over the original one-storey construction erected in 1836.

Other buildings from the period include the Black Swan Inn (now the Oyster Bay Guest House), built in 1841, Schouten House (at various times a brewery/hotel and a school), in 1845, and the Council Chambers, in 1860. About 7.5 km south of the village, the convict-constructed Spiky Bridge, laid without mortar or cement, dates back to 1843.

Surrounded by safe and attractive beaches, both on the bay and along the Swan River, Swansea is now primarily a resort town. Like much of the East Coast and Freycinet Region, Swansea is an ideal area for anglers. Rock and beach fishing are both excellent and the Bay is perfect for those who enjoy combining boating with angling.

The river, too, is worth anglers’ while, with good numbers of bream to be found towards the river mouth, and trout in the stretches upstream and in Lake Leake, a short drive inland. Visitors to the lake can also enjoy two nearby waterfalls near the lake, Lost Falls and Meetus Falls.

Bird-watchers can view muttonbirds (short-tailed shearwaters) and fairy penguins in the evenings at Waterloo Point, and wine-lovers will enjoy a visit to the Craigie Knowe and Spring Vale vineyards a short distance north of the town.
