About the East Coast / Freycinet Region

The East Coast/Freycinet Region of Tasmania is the eastern coastal strip from around the mouth of the Scamander River to the base of the Tasman Peninsula.

In the north is Scamander, a small town situated at the mouth of the Scamander River that has become a popular holiday destination because of its wide, sandy beaches and spectacular views of the ocean. Recreational activities include surfing, swimming and fishing for bream in the river. River cruises on the Scamander are popular with visitors, as are the nearby Scamander Forest Reserve and Douglas-Aspley National Park.

Eighteen km south in the Fingal Valley is the larger town of St Marys, noted for its forest and spectacular ocean views. Travelling south along the Tasman Highway, through the scenic seascapes of Chain of Lagoons, the traveller reaches Bicheno, a fishing port and popular tourist destination, with a range of craft shops, two small aquaria, and a nearby penguin rookery, where fairy penguins can be seen.

Freycinet Peninsula lies further to the south, dominated by the Freycinet National Park, which includes the secluded Wineglass Bay, voted by several travel authorities as one of the world's ten best beaches. Famous features of the park include its red and pink granite formations and a series of jagged granite peaks in a line, called ''The Hazards.'' Near the southern tip of the peninsula, Mount Freycinet rises to a height of 620 m, while Schouten Island, a kilometre or so offshore is a secluded spot home to fur seals. Tours to the island are available from nearby Coles Bay.

Further south still are Triabunna, a scenic township surrounded by beaches, hills and beautiful tracts of eucalyptus forest, and Orford, on the southern margin of a substantial coastal inlet called Prosser Bay. Beyond this bay are the waters of the Mercury Passage, with the strong relief of Maria Island providing a spectacular backdrop to the view.
