Hobart is Australia’s second oldest city, its historic past woven into the fabric of its busy present. The city is located on the estuary of the Derwent River, at the base of Mt Wellington. It began as a penal settlement in 1803, and flourished as a whaling town in the 1840’s. The historic rock-walled marina, Constitution Dock in Sullivan’s Bay, is still in use today, and is probably best known as the finishing point for the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race.

The area surrounding the dock includes The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, built in 1863, which houses collections from Australia’s oldest historic society. Next door is the Town Hall, built 1866 and Parliament House, built by convicts in1835.

The Castray Esplanade was designed as a riverside promenade in the 19th century and runs along the shoreline around Battery Point. Behind it is Salamanca Place, where colonial warehouses have been remodeled to house art galleries and specialty shops. This is the place to come on a Saturday for the markets -look out for handworked glass, ceramics and woodcraft. The newest attraction in Salamanca Square is the Antarctic Adventure Centre, with its interactive displays of Antarctic life – a must for the kids!

Walk down Kelly’s steps from Salamanca Square to the now restored Mariner’s village, Battery Point. Visit historic ‘Narryna’, a beautiful Georgian house now converted into a folk museum, or try one of the walking tours available.

To explore more of Hobart’s history, see the Criminal Courts and Penitentiary Chapel in Campbell St. There are underground passages, solitary confinement cells and an execution yard, with gallows. Choose between a day tour or a ‘ghost’ tour.

Check out gardening guru Peter Cundall’s vegie patch at Botanical Gardens or venture further afield to see the Cadbury Factory, or the Cascade Brewery, with its beer making museum and beautiful gardens. On the way there, you can stop at Alpenrail, the largest miniature railway in Australia, set in a miniature Swiss village.

For the more adventurous, there is two hour tour of the Hobart waterfront in a sea kayak, or the Mount Wellington Descent, a 21k bike ride from the summit of the Mount Wellington to the centre of Hobart.

Unwind one evening at Wrest Point, with a choice of restaurants or a visit to the casino, or see a show at the ornate Theatre Royal. If you prefer music, the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra now has a home in the Federation Concert Hall.
