About the Heritage Highway Region
The Heritage Highway Region of Tasmania is the area around the Midland Highway, the main highway in the State, connecting its two largest cities, Hobart, the capital, in the south and Launceston in the north.
The first record of movement between the two centres was in 1821 when then Governor Lachlan Macquarie selected sites for towns on the highway. It was known as the “Main Road” for most of its history. In the 1930s, it became known as the Midland Highway, and within the last decade has also had 'The Heritage Highway' label applied to it.
The Highway by-passes many of the towns in the region, allowing purposeful commuters to make good speed between the two cities. However, more leisurely travellers find diverting into the towns and villages well worth the time spent.
After passing through the Launceston/Tamar Valley Region, the Highway enters the region named for it at Perth, which, like nearby Longford, is an historic town with many buildings dating back to the early 1800s. About 50 km to the south is the former garrison town of Campbell Town, the major rest area on the Highway. Campbell Town is home to Australia’s oldest surviving bridge, built in 1822.
Ross, the next town encountered, is also noted for its historic bridge, as well as its 19th century sandstone buildings and convict history. The Tasmanian Wool Museum is also of interest to travellers.
Oatlands, 117 km south of Launceston, is one of Tasmania's oldest settlements and is considered to have the largest number of colonial sandstone buildings in any town in Australia, many built by convict labour. The area is decorated with some inventive topiary, a tradition in the district for half a century.
In the southern portion of the region is the town of Bagdad (named by a 19th century aficionado of the “Arabian Nights”), an area of orchards and small mixed farms, and a commuter settlement for workers in Hobart, 37 km to the south.
