About CYGNET

Cygnet is one of the major centres in the Tasmanian Huon Valley area. The Cygnet area was first explored by Bruni D'Entrecasteaux who sailed up the Huon River in 1793 and named the bay which runs up to Cygnet, Port des Cygnes (the Port of Swans) because of the number of swans in the area. Convict Probation Stations were established and the area became a centre for convicts until the convict stations began to decline in the late 1840s.

Apple orchards, dairy cattle, mixed farming and sawmilling became the mainstays of the local economy. Cygnet has become the centre of an alternative lifestyle community in recent years, with woodturning, wholefood shops, crafts, and vintage car restoration being just some of the local industries which have sprung up. Scenic drives, fishing, boating, picnics and bushwalking are popular pastimes in the area.
