The Huon Valley/D’Entrecasteaux Region of Tasmania comprises the southernmost central area of the State, extending from the western boundary of the Southwest National Park to the D’Entrecasteaux Channel south of Hobart in the east. To the north it reaches a little beyond the northernmost portions of the Huon River.

The Huon, at 170 km in length, is the fourth largest river in Tasmania, Australia. It runs through the fertile Huon Valley from Scott Peak Dam at Lake Pedder where it begins, south-easterly to the Tahune Airwalk, where the Picton River joins, before heading through the rural township, Glen Huon where, just to the south flows down rapids to merge with the sea water and become tidal.

From there, it then travels through Huonville, Franklin, and Cygnet (Port Cygnet). When the river meets the Tasman Sea near Surveyors Bay, it is more than 5 km wide. Beyond Surveyors Bay, the estuary’s waters merge with the D'Entrecasteaux Channel which lies between the mainland to the west and Bruny Island to the east.

On the eastern side of the region, on the D'Entrecasteaux Channel are several small, peaceful towns, such as Kettering and Woodbridge that are home to both local farmers and fishermen, and commuters who work in Hobart and environs.

In the northern part of the region is Huonville, best known as one of Tasmania's primary apple growing areas, although fishing is now the larger industry. Geeveston, to the south-west, on the Huon River is Australia's most southerly administrative centre.

While several small towns are scattered along the western shores of the Channel, the majority of the region is occupied by the Southwest National Park, an area of 6,052 km sq, known for its pristine wilderness and remoteness. Within the area there is only one road, to the hydro-electricity township of Strathgordon. The southern and western reaches of the park are far removed from any vehicular access. The only access is by foot, boat, or light aircraft.
