About the Launceston / Tamar Valley Region
Located at the juncture of the North Esk, South Esk, and Tamar rivers in the north of Tasmania, Launceston is the second largest city in Tasmania (after Hobart). Europeans originally settled at the mouth of the Tamar River at George Town in 1804, but moved about 50 km upstream to the present site of Launceston in 1805.
Launceston is one of Australia's oldest cities and has many historical buildings and sights. It is home to a large collection of magnificently preserved Victorian and Art Deco architecture.
Launceston serves as the commercial hub for the north of the state and, like many parts of Tasmania, is a major tourist centre. A major attraction in the area is the Cataract Gorge, on the city’s western perimeter. The chairlift, built in 1972, crossing the gorge is the longest single span chairlift in the world, with the longest span being 308m.
Other attractions in the vicinity are the City Park (which includes an enclosure for Japanese Macaques (or Snow Monkeys), a gift from the sister-city of Ikeda), Launceston Lakes Wildlife Park (home to both native animals, such as Tasmanian Devils, and exotic species, such as alpacas), and Boag’s Brewery.
The Tamar River in northern Tasmania is formed by the merging of the North Esk and South Esk rivers in Launceston. It flows north for approximately 70 km into Bass Strait at Low Head. Despite its name, the river is not technically a river but is estuarine. It is saline and tidal over its entire length.
Although there are several bridge crossings in Launceston, these are across the Esk rivers; there are none across the Tamar in the city itself. The only Tamar bridge crossing is the Batman Bridge, a spectacular bridge in the relatively remote area of Sidmouth, around half way up the river.
There are more than twenty vineyards lining the shores of the Tamar and tourists are guided by the Tamar Valley Wine Route. The main varieties of grapes grown are pinot noir and chardonnay.
