About ST HELENS

St Helens is located 166 km east of Launceston, and is the largest town on the Tasmanian East Coast. Captain Tobias Furneaux was the first European to explore the area when he sailed up the coast in 1773. Whalers and sealers used the area and the settlement which grew up became known as Georges Bay. The first official land grant was in 1830 and the village was renamed St Helens in 1835. Tin was discovered nearby in 1874 and the port thrived until the turn of the century. Many of the miners moved to the coast and settled at St Helens after the mines were closed.

The town of St Helens has a mild climate and the economy depends on fishing, timber and tourism. There is a major fishing fleet (the town is famous for its crayfish, scallops, abalone and flounder), boat building, and a ships chandlery.

The beaches are ideal for fishing, swimming and surfing.
