About the North East / St Helens Region
The North-East/St Helens Region of Tasmania is the area of the State from the north coast around the town of Bridport to the eastern coast near Beaumaris. The region extends south and west to the inland area east of Launceston.
Bridport, in the north-west of the Region, is located on the long, sweeping Anderson Bay. Its beaches offer safe swimming, making the town a popular destination for holidaying families. A ferry operates from Bridport to Lady Barron on Flinder’s Island.
The coast between Bridport and Tomahawk, to the east, is dominated by sandy beaches and granite boulders distinctively decorated by orange coloured lichens. Visitors to the area are also attracted by the Granite Point Coastal Reserve and Bridport Wildflower Reserve, particularly in the spring when the wildflowers are at their best.
Inland from Bridport is Scottsdale, set in a rich fertile valley that sustains both dairy and vegetable farming. Also in the area is the Southern Hemisphere’s largest lavender farm, a popular attraction in summer when the plants are in full flower.
On the eastern side of the region, about 150 km east of Launceston, is the town of St Helens, situated on Georges Bay. This fishing port, formerly a whaling base in the 19th century, is the largest town in the North-East Region, and is a popular resort for those keen on fishing, swimming and other aquatic activities.
North of St Helens is Mt William National Park, home to a wide variety of wildlife including wombats, echidnas and Tasmanian devils, many of which are best spotted by torchlight in the evening. The Park is noted for its coastal heath-lands, and beaches such as the Bay of Fires, the entrance to which – Binalong Bay – is considered to be one of the most beautiful in the State. Mt William itself is 216 m high and offers visitors spectacular views of the surrounding coast.
Other popular beaches in the area include Cape Naturaliste, Stumpy’s Bay and the beach near the Eddystone Point lighthouse.
