About BURNIE

The town of Burnie is located on the north coast of Tasmania, and is characterised by wooden houses on the sides of the hills and overlook the bay. The area was first explored by Bass and Flinders who circumnavigated Van Diemen's Land in 1798. It became a timber port, with timber being exported to Melbourne, Adelaide and Launceston. The town was settled in the early 1840s and named after William Burnie, who was the director of the Van Diemen's Land Company at that time. The discovery of tin in 1871 also encouraged the growth of the area.

Today Burnie is a city of substantial size, with its port and the timber industry being the main contributors to the local economy.
