About the North West and Stanley Region
The North-West/Stanley Region of Tasmania is the region west of Devonport on the island’s north coast and from the north-western tip of Tasmania to the coast to the west of the Savage River National Park.
This national park spreads over almost 180 km sq of the region, and is the largest undisturbed area of temperate rainforest in Australia. While most national parks in the country are popular tourist destinations, much of Savage River has extremely limited access in order to maintain the pristine quality of its forests.
The most heavily populated part of the North-West Region is its northern coast, from the small towns of Ulverstone and Penguin (named for the Fairy Penguin rookeries that are common along the less populated areas of the coast) in the east to the far-west of the State. The Bass Highway links these settlements.
West of Penguin is Burnie, the region’s largest city. Originally settled in 1827 and known as Emu Bay, Burnie went on to become one of Australia’s major container ports and, until towards the end of the 1990s, a major centre for paper production. It is now catering increasingly to the tourist trade. Nearby Wynyard is the location of the closest Tasmanian airport to the mainland, with daily flights available to and from Melbourne.
Further along the western coast is Stanley, a small and very picturesque town, notable for the brightly decorated terraces of cottages nestling along the long isthmus leading to an extinct volcano. This volcanic plug was discovered by the explorers Bass and Flinders in 1798, who officially named it Circular Head. Now referred to as The Nut, it rises steeply to a flat top with a height of 143 m. A steep walking path leads to the top of this landmark.
To the north of the very western tip of the State lie three islands – Robbins, Hunter and Three Hummock – popular with kayakers and ornithologists.
