Koonya is located 15 km from Port Arthur. It was established as a convict outstation in 1841 and was originally known as ''Cascades''.

It is now the site of a few isolated houses and a superbly restored penitentiary which offers unique accommodation in a recreated 19th Century penal institution. It is set in an area of beautiful walks to the mountains and the sea.
