About the Tasman Peninsula Region

The Tasman Peninsula is located around 75 km by road south-east of Hobart, Tasmania. It lies south and west of Forestier Peninsula, to which it is connected by an isthmus called Eaglehawk Neck. This in turn is joined to the rest of Tasmania by an isthmus called East Bay Neck, near the town of Dunalley (about 60 km by road from Hobart).

The first European settlement of the Peninsula was Port Arthur in the early 1830s. For almost two decades, it was a penal colony, the geographical isolation of the area discouraging escapes by the secondary offenders it housed. The prison closed in 1877 and almost immediately became a place of interest to visitors. In the late 1970s funding began to preserve the area and enhance its value as a tourist destination. In 1996, the historical centre was the site of one of the nation’s worst spree killings, a tragedy which has not lessened the site’s interest for visitors.

North of Port Arthur is Taranna, where the Conservation Park is a popular local visitor attraction, a number of delightful beaches.

Bushwalking is also popular in the often rugged terrain, particularly picturesque spots being Cape Raoul and Cape Pillar at the extreme south west and south east ends of the Peninsula, separated by the entrance to Port Arthur. Other smaller towns are located on the peninsula, the largest of which are Nubeena and Koonya. Smaller centres include Premaydena, Highcroft and Stormlea.

Tasman Peninsula is famous for its rugged eastern coastline, and much of it is now the Tasman National Park. The park incorporates several off-shore islands, including Fossil Island, Hippolyte Rocks and Tasman Island.

At Eaglehawk Neck are many strange rock formations, including Remarkable Caves, Tasman's Arch and the Tessellated Pavement. Further south are the highest sea cliffs in the southern hemisphere, rising 300 m above the Tasman Sea at Cape Hauy. The peninsula also offers excellent surfing at Cape Roaul and Roaring Beach.
