About QUEENSTOWN

Queenstown is a copper and gold mining town located 256 km west of Hobart. The area was first explored in the 1860s, but the terrain was inhospitable and it wasn't until gold was discovered in 1881 that prospectors and miners began to move in. The gold supply was exhausted by 1891, by which time copper mining had started.

A combination of timber felling which stripped the hills bare, sulphur fumes from the smelters which killed off plants, and heavy rainfall which washed away the topsoil, resulted in the landscape turning into a surreal nightmare by the early 1900s.

Queenstown is now classified as an historic town, with numerous significant buildings.
