Strahan is located 41 km from Queenstown on the west coast of Tasmania and lies on the edge of the beautiful and unspoiled Macquarie Harbour. It is one of the loneliest and isolated outposts in Australia. Macquarie Harbour was named after Governor Lachlan Macquarie. It opens to the sea through the narrow waters of Hell's Gates, and is fed by the waters of the King and Gordon Rivers.

James Kelly and his party entered Hell's Gates in 1815, and as a consequence of their descriptions of the vast stands of trees, timber cutters had moved into the area and had started cutting down the magnificent huon pines which were perfect for ship building. A penal colony was established at Sarah Island in 1831 and became one of the cruellest of all convict stations until its closure in 1833. In 1877 Strahan became a vital port for the tin mines at Mt Heemskirk.

Possibly the greatest attraction in the area is the Franklin Lower Gordon Wild Rivers National Park. This unique site was first explored in 1816 by James Kelly who named it after James Gordon, the man who had given him the whale boat to explore the river. In the late 1970s the Tasmanian Government made a decision to dam the Gordon River. The ensuing activism caused the Federal Government in 1983 to declare the whole area (including the Franklin River and Aboriginal art in Fraser Cave) as a preserved site under a World Heritage order.
