About ZEEHAN

Zeehan is a former mining town located in south-west Tasmania which has been classified by the National Trust. Abel Tasman sighted Mount Zeehan as early as 1642. In 1802 Bass and Flinders travelled around the Tasmanian coast and named both Mount Zeehan and Mount Heemskirk after the two boats used by Tasman in his epic voyage.

The area around Zeehan was wild and rugged and remained unexplored until the discovery of tin in 1871. The township was built during the silver-lead mining boom of the 1880s, and led to Zeehan being known as the 'Silver City of the West'. It grew to become the third largest town in Tasmania, before the decline of the mining period by 1910. Old buildings such as the Grand Hotel and the Gaiety Theatre serve as reminders to Zeehan's heyday when there were up to 10,000 residents.

Local attractions include Zeehan Museum, and Trial Harbour and Granville Harbour, both of which are popular fishing spots.
