This remote and inaccessible corner of Tasmania is its least populous but contains vast areas of unspoilt scenery, rugged peaks, wild rivers, unique flora and fauna, and a long and rugged coastline.
During the 19th century, as Europeans colonised other parts of the State, this area was found to be harsh and inhospitable. Limited numbers of sealers, whalers, miners and timber-getters based themselves in the area.
The region remains very lightly settled. The eastern areas of the region include areas of the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers and the Southwest National Parks. Parts of the wilderness are more than 50 km from the nearest road, so the only access to the area is by foot, air or sea.
The majority of the towns in the West Coast Wilderness are in the north. The port of Strahan, on Long Bay at the northern end of Macquarie Harbour, is the region’s main tourist centre and is home to the main west coast airport. It is also the base for boat trips to Sarah Island, which contains ruins of one of Australia’s most notorious convict settlements, and the lower Gordon River.
From Strahan, visitors can take the West Coast Wilderness Railway, which travels along the northern slopes of the King River and alongside the Queen River to terminate in the mining centre of Queenstown. The railway is a reconstruction of the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company railway which ran from 1899 to 1963. The stark, spectacular mountains surrounding Queenstown have unusual pink and grey hues that come from the conglomerate rocks on the two most adjacent mountains - Mount Lyell and Mount Owen.
On the coast further north is Zeehan, a major mining town in the late 19th and early 20th centuries but now a smaller centre catering for tourists interested in western Tasmania’s mining history.
