About Tasmania

The island of Tasmania lies to the south of mainland Australia, a day’s boat ride across Bass Strait from Melbourne to Devonport.

Tasmania is home to some of the world’s last great untouched wilderness areas. At its heart lies the four National Parks, each with their own unique features. Cradle Mountain/Lake St Clair National Park is lush rainforest, with a wide variety of animal life. Visitors can trek through its forests, or go trout fishing in Lake St Clair, the deepest freshwater lake in Australia. Directly to the east of this park is the awe inspiring Walls of Jerusalem National park, where you can see features like Herod’s Gate, the pool of Bethesda, and King David’s Peak. This park abuts the mountainous Ben Lomond National Park, Tasmania’s skiing destination.

To the south of Cradle Mountain is the Franklin Gordon Wild Rivers Park, where white water rafting, jet boating and river cruises offer a wild ride for thrill seekers.

Lastly, Freycinet National Park is on the East coast. Tourists can watch sea birds, or go kayaking, swimming or scuba diving in the pure clear waters of Wineglass Bay.

Tasmania retains much of its colonial heritage. The city of Hobart is Australia’s second oldest city, and many of its earliest buildings remain. Parliament House, the Theatre Royal and the old Courthouse are all worth a look, and Salamanca Place, with its lively Saturday market, is a must see. Constitution Dock, the finish line for Sydney to Hobart Yacht race, is surrounded by evidence of Hobart’s maritime history.

Also worth a look is the Royal Botanic Gardens, especially the sub Antarctic plant house, and the remains of the ‘furnace wall’ built by the originally gardeners to protect fruit trees
East from Hobart, on the Forestier Peninsula, is the former prison settlement of Port Arthur built in 1830. Visitors can explore the former prison complex, or take one of the tours on offer. These include a ferry ride to the ‘Isle of the Dead’.

Other historic sites of interest include the city of Launceston, the convict-built Ross Bridge, with carvings done by convict sculptor Daniel Herbert, and the old mining town of Corinna, on the Pieman River. Try Pieman River cruises, where you can hear the gruesome tale of the original Pieman, convict escapee Alexander Pearce, a former pastrycook who turned cannibal.

There are lavender farms, a town of mazes called Tazmazia, and the Tarkine forest adventure a wilderness at the bottom of a sinkhole!
