About the Dandenong Ranges Region
The Dandenong Ranges are a group of low mountain ranges 38 km east of Melbourne, Victoria. They rise to 633 metres at Mount Dandenong, where light to moderate snowfalls have been recorded on Mount Dandenong once every couple of winters.
Consisting predominantly of Devonian dacite and rhyodacite, the topography consists of a series of ridges dissected by deeply-cut streams. Sheltered gullies in the south of the range are home to temperate rainforest, fern gullies and Mountain Ash forest, whereas the drier ridges and exposed northern slopes are covered by dry sclerophyll forest of stringybarks and box.
Much of the range has been designated National Park. The Dandenong Ranges National Park comprises five sections: Doongalla Forest (which contains Mount Dandenong and the SkyHigh lookout and restaurant with panoramic views of Melbourne's east); Ferntree Gully National Park (which contains a steep walking track with over 700 steps, utilised by both amateur fitness-buffs and local AFL football teams in training); Sherbrooke Forest; Olinda Forest; and Mount Evelyn Forest.
A number of outer suburbs of Melbourne are located in the area include Belgrave, Dandenong, Emerald, Kallista, Kalorama, Montrose, Mount Dandenong, Olinda, Sassafras and Upwey.
Attractions in the area include the William Ricketts Sanctuary (a unique park with over 93 ceramic sculptures woven into a eucalyptus forest on the east face of Mount Dandenong); National Rhododendron Gardens in the Kalorama area; and Sherbrooke Forest’s large and flourishing population of superb lyrebirds.
The Ranges are also the home of the popular Puffing Billy Railway, a narrow gauge 2 ft 6 in (762 mm) gauge heritage railway that runs through the southern foothills of the Dandenong Ranges to Gembrook.
Railway enthusiasts will also be drawn to the Emerald Lake Model Railway, the largest working scale model railway display in the Southern Hemisphere.
