About DUNOLLY

Dunolly is located in beautiful bushland in the centre of Victoria's goldfields. The area is believed to have been occupied by the Wemba-Wemba Aboriginal people prior to European settlement. Scotsman Campbell McDougall established a pastoral run in 1845 and named it after Dunolly Castle in Scotland, and other settlers gradually began to take up land.

Together with Tarnagulla and Moliagul, Dunolly forms ''The Golden Triangle'', a district where more nuggets have been discovered than any other location in Australia. Gold was discovered in the early 1850s and as recently as 1976 a 5.6 kg nugget was turned up.

Today, the main street is lined with kurrajong trees and still retains some of the fine heritage buildings from its heyday. A Gold rush Festival is held annually on the Melbourne Cup weekend.
