About MALDON

Maldon is located 138 km north-west of Melbourne. It was named after Maldon, a town in Essex, England. Gold was discovered in the area in the 1850s and by the 1860s Maldon rivalled Bendigo for returns. By 1870 the gold began to dwindle and the last operating mine had closed by 1926.

Maldon was the first town in Victoria to be classified by the National Trust. It has a remarkably preserved streetscape from the gold mining era. Wide verandahs, stone buildings, quaint cottages, old-fashioned shop fronts, flagstone paving and European trees give the impression that time has stood still.

Other local points of interest are the Maldon Historic Reserve with 2500 ha of public land and forest which was created to preserve gold mining relics, Porcupine Township which is a recreation of an 1850s gold town, and Anzac Hill which is accessible by foot or car and has magnificent views of Mount Franklin, Mount Macedon and the Grampians.
