Johanna is located along the Great Ocean Road, west of Cape Otway. The town is named after Johanna Dennie, who was the infamous mistress of the town's founder Julian Gray.

The surf at Johanna Beach is highly regarded, although it is not always safe for swimming. There is a beautiful beach walk and good fishing.
