Warrnambool is located in the heart of the Great Ocean Road and is surrounded by lush hinterland and rural landscapes. The name is derived from the language of the Kuurn Kopan Noot Aboriginal people who lived in the area prior to European settlement. There are spectacular stretches of coastline, safe sheltered beaches, surf, rock and river fishing, parks and gardens, bike trails, a large variety of accommodation, art and craft centres (the town is known for its rugs and blankets), and seaside walking tracks.

The Mahogany Trail walking track passes the possible site of a mysterious shipwreck, which local legend purports to be a Portuguese vessel which ran aground in the 1500s. Documentary evidence exists to confirm that the Portuguese were operating north west of Australia at that time, and it is possible that they discovered the East Coast of Australia before Captain James Cook.

Other areas of local interest are the Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum, Cudgee Creek Wildlife Park, Hopkins River Estuary, Hopkins Falls, Thunder Point Coastal Reserve and Shelly Beach, Stingray Bay and Middle Island, Lake Pertobe Adventure Playground, and Tower Hill State Game Reserve. A whale viewing platform is located at Logans Beach, which is known as the southern right whale nursery due to the fact that the whales give birth every year between June and October just 100 metres off the shoreline. Between Moonlight Head in the east and Port Fairy in the west, there is a 110-km stretch of coastline known as The Shipwreck Trail where 163 ships are known to have been wrecked.
