About the Great Ocean Road Region

The Great Ocean Road region of Victoria is the portion of southern part of the State extending from Warrnambool in the west to Geelong, 75 km south-west of Melbourne, in the east, and up to the lakeside town of Colac in the north.

The area is named for the renowned, scenic coastal drive which stretches for 273 km between Warrnambool and Torquay, a seaside town km south of Geelong. It was built between 1919 and 1932by 3,000 returned servicemen as a memorial for fellow soldiers, killed in the First World War.

Flourishing as a major port during the Victorian gold rush, from the mid-19th century to the beginning of the 20th, Warrnambool has now become one of the State’s most popular coastal destinations. Among its annual attractions are a three-day steeplechasing and racing festival in May and the prestigious Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic on the Australia Day weekend.

The section near Port Campbell covers some of the most scenic coastline in the world, because of its striking and dramatic natural rock formations. These formations include Loch Ard Gorge, the Grotto, and London Arch (which was known as London Bridge until the “bridge” collapsed in January 1990). The most famous of these formations are the Twelve Apostles, a collection of natural limestone stacks standing just off shore in the Port Campbell National Park. This area is also referred to as the Shipwreck Coast, due to more than fifty ships having been lost in the region.

After Apollo Bay the road passes through the Great Otway National Park, which includes some of the last surviving rain forests in the south of Australia. Further east are Lorne (popular for its pier fishing for barracuda, whiting, and trevally) and Torquay (a major surfing centre). Geelong, at the eastern extremity of the region, is Victoria’s second largest city. It is home to an array of events and festivals from the multicultural Pako Festa to the Australian International Airshow and Australia's largest yachting regatta.
