About the Macedon Ranges / Spa Country Region

The Spa Country is the region of Victoria north-west of Melbourne that stretches from the Macedon Ranges district in the east to the area around Daylesford and Heburn, best known for their mineral water spas.

Mount Macedon is a town located 64 km north-west of Melbourne, on the side of the mountain of the same name. The town was largely established by Melbourne's wealthy elite in the gold rush era of the mid- to late 19th century who used it as a summer retreat. Consequently, it is now best known for its collection of 19th century gardens and associated extravagant large homes which is considered to be one of the most important such collections in Australia.

To the west of Mount Macedon is Daylesford, a former gold-mining town in the foothills of Great Dividing Ranges. The broader area around the town, including Hepburn Springs to the north, is renowned for its natural spring mineral spas where visitors can sample the mineral water. This, together with its proximity to Melbourne, makes it a popular destination for tourists.

The Spa Country, which was formed by volcanic activity about five million years ago, contains approximately 80% of all the mineral springs in Victoria. Not long after its settlement, Daylesford was noted for these mineral springs, and from the 1880s to the 1920s, it was a major spa resort. Four separate surrounding area were gradually amalgamated into the town of Daylesford-Hepburn Springs.

Hepburn Springs, however, still retains its separate and strongly held identity and is strongly identified with the Swiss and Italian families who settled in the area during the gold rush. Hepburn Springs has predominantly Edwardian architecture, unlike the Victorian architecture of nearby Daylesford. This is due to the devastation of the 1906 bushfire which destroyed most buildings in the settlement.

Nearby Kyneton is also home to several popular events such as the Kyneton Jazz Festival and the Daffodil and Arts Festival.
