About ABBOTSFORD
Abbotsford is a suburb of Melbourne approximately two kilometres east of the CBD. The population is around 5,000.
Landmarks of interest:
Abbotsford Convent:
If you have an appreciation for architecture, especially architecture with outstanding medieval French features, you will enjoy a visit to the ‘Abbotsford Convent’, formerly ‘The Convent of the Good Shepherd’. Back in the 1860s, due to self-sufficient farming practises, the sisters of the convent were able to feed 1,000 women and children.
Today the Abbotsford Convent is a hub for artists, exhibitions, workshops and cultural experiences. Each month the convent has markets offering food & beverages, music, arts, craft and fashion. They also have annual festivals and events, like the ‘Crime & Justice Literary Festival’, and for lovers of string instruments there’s the ‘Guitar Makers Festival’, for writers there’s the ‘Writers at the Convent’ or designers can indulge in the ‘State of Design Festival’. There’s also ‘Opera at the Convent’, ‘World Vegan Day’ and more...
Skipping Girl:
One of the most famous landmarks of Abbotsford is the “Skipping Girl”. She was originally erected for the Nycander factory in 1936. Her purpose was to advertise a particular brand of vinegar. The Skipping Girl is a metal construction, outlined with neon lights, making it a dominating figure in the night. In 1996 the factory was demolished, along with the sign. No doubt the destruction of this loved landmark didn’t go down too well with the residents of Abbotsford. So in 1970 a smaller replica was made, which now stands on the roof of the Crusader Plate factory at 651 Victoria Street, Abbotsford. The sign is now listed with the National Trust, which should protect her for future years.
Dights Falls:
Dights Falls is not only famous for the volcanic basaltic flow that happened around 800,000 years ago, and it’s abundance of graptolite fossils that can be found in the sedimentary stone, it’s also the place where Magpies choose to live. If it weren’t for the Magpies of Dights Falls, the Collingwood Football Club may have found their mascot elsewhere.
Long before European settlement, Dights Falls was the home of the indigenous Wurundjeri tribe of the Kulin nation. The rock falls were a place where migrating fish were trapped; this was a welcome food source for the Aboriginal people. It was also a chosen place to meet with clans for important tribal business and trade.
Collingwood Town Hall:
The Collingwood Town Hall is a grand landmark of Abbotsford. You’ll find this civic building in Hoddle Street.
The Town Hall was built between 1885 & 1890. It was designed by local architect Mr. George R Johnson in the second Empire style. The detail of the building, its pyramid domes and four clock faces, placed below the highest dome, make this Town Hall one of the finest ever built in Australia. As with many old buildings, this one met with fire in the 1920s, destroying much of the interiors, which were soon after remodeled in Art Deco style.
Today, special functions and exhibitions fill the spaces and corridors of the Collingwood Town Hall.
Victoria Park Stadium:
Up until 2005, the Victorian Park Stadium, which was built in 1892, had been the headquarters for the Collingwood Football Club for 107 years. No doubt, this would be a record for the longest association between a football club and a stadium.
After having closed in 1999, the stadium was set to be demolished, but due to heritage status, this has been put on hold. Today you can catch a regional cricket game or a home match for the Collingwood reserves (VFL).
