Albert Park and Albert Park Lake is 3 kilometres south of the Melbourne business district.

Albert Park is characterised by its wide streets, lined with Canary Island Date Palms.

One of the features of this beautiful suburb is no doubt the all encompassing park, which is approximately 560 acres (226-hectares) of stunning parkland. In its centre is Albert Park Lake, which takes up a staggering 120 acres (48-hectares), offering water activities that include boating, canoeing and kayaking. All can be hired.

The park offers several playgrounds and picnic areas, where you can meet up with family and friends. Most picnic areas have barbecues, shelters and toilets.

Within the park there are many sporting facilities, which include an 18 hole golf course, a golf driving range, 4.7 kilometres of walking and cycling track (great for parents and children). There are 21 sports fields within the park, and just when you were starting to think that you couldn’t possibly fit anything more into this vast area, there’s the Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit.

The park also boasts the Melbourne Sport and Aquatic Centre, which is an international facility. The centre was opened on July 24, 1997 and cost the tax payers $AUD65 million.

If you’re travelling with your dog, you’ll be pleased to know that the park has leash and off- leash Zones for exercising your pooch. How good is that!

While strolling through this maze of parkland, you’ll come across a choice of open-air cafes where you can sit and enjoy a coffee and a bit to eat. For the serious diner, The Point Restaurant ‘Awarded two Chef’s Hats’ by the Age Good Food Guide 2011, is the place to indulge in a culinary feast with accompanying wines. The restaurant can be found at The Point Albert Park, Aquatic Drive.

Some of Melbourne’s finest heritage listed, Victorian buildings, are in Albert Park.

For those with an appreciation of architecture from the Victorian period, head to 33-51 St Vincent Place South, and cast your eyes on the Rochester Terrace, built 1869 – 1879. The terraces are built in the Colonial Georgian/Regency style, designed by Architect, Charles Bolten Boykett.

In Bridport Street & 2-36 Victoria Avenue Albert Park, you’ll find the Primary School, built in 1874, designed by Architect, J Schnieder. Though built in the Victorian period it is of Neo-Gothic style noted for its lack of ornament. Today, this grand building continues to be used for the purpose of education.

The Hotel Victoria is a must see landmark and can be found at 123 Beaconsfield Parade Albert Park. The four story hotel was built in 1887, in the Victorian period in the second Empire style. This prominent building was designed by Architect, Richard Speight. There’s no stopping for a drink or a coffee here today, as the hotel is used as residential apartments.

Biltmore was built in 1887 as a Coffee Palace and Hotel. It can be found at 152 Bridport Street, Albert Park. It’s built in the Victorian period in the Academic Classical style. The building is now used as residential apartments. Biltmore was designed by Architect Walter Scott Law. The building was completed by architects Federick de Garis and Son.
