Taking in the history, architecture, art, breathtaking coastline, shops, restaurants, cafes and parklands, Brighton is truly a town not to be missed when visiting Melbourne.

In 1840, Mr Henry Dendy, purchased 2,072 hectares of Port Phillip land. He must have been a trusting man, as he hadn’t sighted the land prior to the purchase. The following year he arrived in Australia to claim his land. The land that he purchased had no fresh water, although most of it was coastal. This meant that his plan to subdivide the land and sell it off wasn’t an easy task and was made even harder when the financial depression hit. He later sold his allotment to Mr Jonathan Binns, who had arrived in Melbourne a year earlier than Dendy. The land was later named the Brighton Estate, which was sold to the wealthy, who built grand houses in an area known today as the Esplanade, which overlooks the Dendy Street Beach.

Between 1843 and 1855 several churches were built in Brighton: Anglican, Methodist, Wesleyan, Catholic, and schools within the churches were opened. The population of Brighton towards the end of 1855 was around 2,700.

Brighton’s famous bathing boxes were first erected in the late 1800s. Today they can be found at Dendy Street Beach. These famous bathing boxes are built from timber and corrugated iron, and each one has its own colour theme, and all maintain their Victorian architectural features.

Although the boxes offer protection from the wind or hot summer days, there are no services, like electricity or running water.

If you’re into architecture, treat yourself and visit ‘Kamesburg’, which is one of Melbourne’s finest homesteads, built in 1874, surrounded by a beautiful formal manicured garden, which is open to the public. For those travelling by car, there’s parking in either Asling Street or Martin Street.
You can also reach ‘Kamesburg’, by taking the ‘Heritage Walk’, which takes around 40 minutes. It’s a nice flat walk. The distance of the heritage walk is around 2.2 kilometres. If you’re looking to take public transport to ‘Kamesburg’, you’ll be pleased to know that you can reach it by public transport, being by train or bus.

There is also the ‘Architecture Trail’, which is around the 4 kilometre mark, it takes about 1 hour and the grade is gentle. This walk is perfect for those looking to walk at a holiday pace, allowing you to take in the diverse style of architecture along the way.

If art is your passion, the Bayside Coastal ‘Art Trail’ is a must, covering a staggering 17 kilometres of coastline. The art trail is a brilliant documentation of Australian artists in a bid to celebrate their lives and their artwork, which includes the works of impressionist painters of the mid 1800s, such as Tom Roberts, Frederick McCubbin and Louis Abrahams.
