About CARLTON
Carlton is approximately 2 kilometres from the Melbourne CBD. The population is around 13,000. The architecture is of the Victorian era.
The Melbourne Museum is the final resting place of Australia’s most famous race horse, Phar Lap. Between 1929 and 1932, Phar Lap had 51 starts and 37 wins. He was the third highest stake-winner in the world, with some bookmakers refusing to accept bets on some of his races.
Carlton is Melbourne’s most exciting and diverse suburb. Known as ‘little Italy’. If you are a restaurant lover of fine exotic food, you will experience the culinary delights of many countries around the globe: Modern Australia, Mexican, Italian, Indian, Thai, Korean, Chinese, South American, Nepalese, Malaysian, Japanese, French, Greek, Singaporean, Austrian, Lebanese, Moroccan, Austrian, German and more.
Take a stroll down ‘Lygon Street’ and visit one of the many bookshops, fashion outlets, cafes and bars.
If you would like to try a drop of good Australian beer, visit the famous Carlton United Brewery, at Abbotsford (distance from Carlton is approximately 10 kilometres), known to be the largest brewery in Australia, which is open for tours. The tours go for an hour and a half.
One would imagine finding a World Heritage building as grand as the ‘Royal Exhibition Building’, built in the 19th Century, in cities like Rome, London or Paris. This is site of Australia’s first parliament; this grand building houses national and international exhibition and Trade Fairs. When built, the Great Hall was the largest and tallest building in Australia. Guided tours are available most days at around 2 pm. Enquiries can be made by calling: 13 11 02. Wheelchair access is offered via the northern entry.
The gardens surrounding the Royal Exhibition Building were designed by Reed and William Sangster and are just as breath taking as the building.
The Melbourne General - Historic Cemetery opened 155 years ago. The first person to be buried in the cemetery was John Alexander, aged 36. The burial took place May 28th 1853. You will find his elaborate grave in the Church of England section. More notable people laid to rest at Melbourne General are: Sir Robert Menzies – PM of Australia. He is one of four PMs laid to rest in Melbourne General, the others being, James Henry Scullin, Harold Holt and Sir John Grey Gorton.
You will find the world’s largest IMAX 3D cinema screen in Carlton, a whopping eight storeys high; ten times larger than the traditional cinema screen, with a sound track like no other, on six digital tracks.
While in Melbourne, take time out to visit the Melbourne Zoo, first opened in 1862. There is nothing nicer than seeing animals, reptiles and birds living in harmony, with us humans being respectful of their needs, giving them the space to live out their lives in a happy and safe environment.
