Today the population of Sandringham is around 9,000.

Originally named the ‘Gypsy Village’, Sandringham is approximately 16km south of the Melbourne CBD, located beside Port Phillip Bay. It is one of the more prestigious suburbs of Melbourne. Today it is the most expensive suburb of Melbourne to purchase real estate.

The former Prime Minister of Australia, Mr Bob Hawke, along with Author, Alan Marshall, sculptor, Guy Boyd and local historian, Jordan Blair-Bremner have all lived in Sandringham.

The Sandringham primary school was opened in 1855, one of the first to be opened in Melbourne.

Sandringham is a popular location for beach lovers, and due to the world famous ‘Sandringham Yacht Club’, it is also the place where yachtsmen choose to visit by land and sea. Non-members can purchase ‘Day Passes’ to the yacht club for as little as ten dollars a day, a maximum of six passes can be purchased per year. When dining at the stylish SYC ‘Harbour View Restaurant’, you will enjoy unrivalled views of Port Philip Bay, the Sandringham Yacht Club Marina, and the Sandringham Harbour. The restaurant is open for breakfast on weekends only.

The village of Sandringham is a buzz of activity, with specialty shops, cafes and restaurant adding to the village atmosphere. For the weight conscious, eat what you like, and then walk off those unwanted calories by setting off on the coast walk, which is a popular walk with the local residents and visitors.

Parents with young children will be please to know that the sea front offers safe swimming beaches and the foreshore is popular destination for the family picnic.

The Sandringham Football Club is home to the football team, the ‘Zebras’.

The Trevor Barker Oval (home of Australian rules football) is in Beach Road. It was named after the St Kilda champion football player, Trevor Barker, who died from cancer at the young age of 39. The oval has a single grandstand that can seat up to 10,000 people.

If you’re looking for somewhere special to hold a wedding ceremony, the Band Rotunda at Sandringham offers such a venue. Make your way up 15 steps to a flat area, which has sweeping views of the beach and breathtaking gardens.
