About the Melbourne Region

Located around Port Phillip Bay, Melbourne is capital of Victoria and the second most populous city in Australia, with a metropolitan area population of approximately 3.74 million. Melbourne is a major centre of commerce, industry and cultural activity.

Melbourne was founded by free settlers in 1835, transformed rapidly into a major metropolis by the gold rush from the 1850s on, and became Australia's largest and most important city by 1865, only overtaken by Sydney in the early 20th century. It served as the capital city of Australia from the time of Federation in 1901, until Federal Parliament moved to the newly purpose-built capital, Canberra, in 1927.

Melbourne is notable for its mix of Victorian and contemporary architecture, its extensive tram network, and its diverse, multicultural society. It is often referred to as Australia's garden city, as it boasts an abundance of parks and gardens, many close to the CBD with a variety of common and rare plant species amid landscaped vistas, pedestrian pathways and tree-lined avenues.

It is also known as an Australian sport capital, and is considered the spiritual home of cricket and Australian Rules football. The first Test match was played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The city celebrates a wide variety of annual cultural events, performing arts and architecture, and is considered to be Australia's live music capital with a large proportion of successful Australian artists emerging from its live music scene.

Attractions in the city include: Federation Square (a major meeting place close to Flinders Street Station, the MCG and other sporting and cultural complexes); the Royal Exhibition Building (one of world’s few extant 19th century exhibition buildings); Crown Casino; Melbourne Docklands (a recently renovated series of of entertainment and cultural precincts on the banks of the Yarra River); and such dining Meccas as Brunswick St, Chapel St, Chinatown and Lygon St.
