About the Melbourne Region

Melbourne has the reputation as Australia’s cultural capital, and it’s easy to see why.
It’s packed with museums, galleries, and performance spaces.

The National Gallery of Victoria is featuring “Liquid Desire”, a Dali exhibition, till October, and at the same time The Melbourne Museum is featuring “A Day in Pompeii”. The Victorian Arts Centre is holding the Melbourne International Arts Festival during October, which includes theatre, cinema, dance and circus.

The Australian Centre of the Moving Image has regular film festivals and themed programs. Her Majesty’s Theatre is gearing up for a season of ‘Chicago’, and ‘The Jersey Boys’ is playing at the Princess Theatre. The historic Regent Theatre is hosting Tori Amos in November.

For those wanting something more reflective, there is The Immigration Museum in the old Customs House, the Maritime Museum or the Museum of Chinese History. Prefer lighthearted and fun? Try the Craft Cubed Exhibition at Craft Victoria, for quirky textiles, jewellery and ceramics.

Melbourne flourished in the 1850’s on the wealth flowing in from the goldfields, and many of these old buildings are still part of Melbourne’s streetscape. The Magistrate’s Court, the Town Hall, The State Library and the City Baths are fine examples of colonial architecture. Pause and admire Flinders’ St Station, or drop in on Young and Jackson’s pub, to see controversial nude, Chloe, who has been there since 1909. If churches are more to your taste, there is St Paul’s cathedral, 1880, St Patrick’s cathedral,1897, St James Cathedral,1853, and the Scots church, 1874.

Prefer sinners to saints? Then try a tour of the Old Melbourne Gaol. Now a museum, it’s best remembered at the place where Ned Kelly was hung.

Melbourne’s love of design and culture also flows into its shopping precincts. Try Lygon St, with the biggest selection of Italian cafes and restaurants in Australia, or try some of the European cafes and cakeshops in St Kilda’s Acland St. Brunswick St is the place for alternative shops such as the Polyester bookshop, or funky second hand stores. Just off Brunswick St, every Saturday the Rose St Artists' Market showcases over 70 of Melbourne's best designers and artists. Chapel St, is the place for designer goods, and the Cathedral Arcade is best known for upmarket alternative shops like Genki, with its Japanese influence, and Alice Euphemia, which stocks locally made designer clothing.

Of course Melbourne offers more contemplative alternatives, such as Fitzroy Gardens, or the Royal Botanic Gardens. Here too is the Sidney Myer Music Bowl, so there may be a musical accompaniment as you wander.
