About YARRAWONGA

Ararat is located in the foothills of the Pyrenees Mountains, and is an old goldmining town. The Tjapwurong Aboriginal people inhabited the area prior to white settlement. Explorer Thomas Mitchell and his party were the first Europeans to visit the district, and settlement began in the early 1840s. Gold was discovered in the area in 1854 and continued to be mined until 1863, with a revival of gold fever from 1910 to 1920 when there was another strike at Mafeking. A large Chinese immigrant population worked the mines and Ararat is the only town in Australia to be founded by Chinese gold miners.

The town is encompassed by the Grampians National Park, Mount Cole State Forest and the Langi Ghiran State Park. Winemaking, manufacturing and agriculture all contribute to the local economy.

There are festivals, boutique shops, a cafe culture and scenic drives, and a tribute to the Chinese heritage of the town at the Gum San Chinese Heritage Centre .

The ten-day Golden Gateway Festival which is a community based event showcasing the talent and skills of the district is held in October.
