About the Murray River Region
The Murray River Region of Victoria is a wide band of country south of border between the New South Wales and Victoria for the majority of its length from around Yarrawonga area in the east to the South Australian border in the west. The NSW/Vic border is generally agreed upon to be the southern high-water mark of the river (ie none of the river itself is actually in Victoria), but this boundary definition can be ambiguous, as the river has changed its course slightly since the border was defined in 1851.
The Murray River is the second longest river in the country, at approximately 3,750 km in length. From its source in the Australian Alps, it meanders for most of its length north-west across Australia’s inland plains, before turning south for its final 500 km into South Australia.
Mildura is the western-most city in the area and the centre of an area straddling Victoria and NSW, known as the Sunraysia region. Mildura is also known as the centre of Victoria’s Food Bowl and is a major producer of citrus fruits (especially oranges) and wine. It is also notable for its grape production, supplying 80% of Victoria’s grapes. Many wineries also source grapes from Mildura.
Mildura is host to many annual festivals such as the Mildura Country Music Festival, the International Balloon Fiesta, the Jazz and Wine Festival, Mildura Wentworth Arts Festival and the Mildura Show.
To the south-east but also on the Murray River is Swan Hill, which has given its name to a wine region spanning the Murray River. The vines are predominantly irrigated from the river.
Further south-east is Shepparton, the fifth largest city in Victoria. Among the attractions for tourists and locals in the city are the huge Kidstown playground, a large swimming centre called Aquamoves, and the Moooving Art project, which involves local artists painting fibreglass cows, which are then displayed in tourist locations throughout the city and surrounding townships.
