About the Phillip Island Region
Phillip Island in Victoria forms a natural breakwater for the shallow waters of Western Port Bay. The island area is approximately 10,000 ha and 26 km long and 9 km at its widest. It has 97 km of coastline, and is part of the Bass Coast Shire. A 640 m concrete bridge connects the mainland town of San Remo with the island town Newhaven.
Although 60% of the island is farmland, devoted to grazing of sheep and cattle, Phillip Island is also a major tourist destination. According to the 2001 Census, its population leaps from about 7,000 to 40,000 during the summer months, and the island is visited by some 3.5 million people annually.
One of the main attractions is the Phillip Island Nature Park which is most notable for being the location of the Penguin Parade, a popular attraction for tourists from all around the world. Hundreds of Little Penguins (otherwise known as Fairy Penguins) have their burrows on the island. In the evening, after a day at sea hunting for fish, they gather in the surf and then come ashore in groups, for safety. Phillip Island is one of the few areas where this species of penguin can be seen.
The park also includes the Koala Conservation Centre, where visitors can walk along a treetop-level boardwalk to observe koalas and other animals in the wild.
The island is recognised as having some of the most consistently reliable and varied surf conditions in the country. The island has hosted various surf events in the past, such as the Rip Curl Pro in 2005 and the Roxy Pro Women's Surfing Festival. Other events include the Churchill Island Working Horse and Pioneer Festival and the Pyramid Rock Festival on New Year's Eve.
Phillip Island is also a motor racing centre. The first races on Phillip Island took place in 1928 with the running of the 100 Miles Road Race. Currently, major events include the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit, including the Superbike World Championship, Australian motorcycle Grand Prix, and V8 Supercars.
