About PORTLAND

Portland is located on Portland Bay and is the only deep-sea port between Adelaide and Port Phillip. The Henty family settled in the district in the 1830s and set about whaling and sealing, as well as crop and grape growing and sheep. Portland is a major exporting centre for wool, grains and manufactured items. An aluminium smelter, fertilisers, fishing and wool stores also contribute to the economy of the district. The area was originally occupied by the Kerrup Tjmara Aboriginal people who knew it as ''Pulumbete''.

The town has many historic buildings including All Saints Catholic Church where Saint Mary MacKillop was a sacristan during her stay in Portland in the 1860s.

Other local places of interest are the Portland Maritime Discovery Centre, and an Historic Shipwrecks Trail. Portland Bay is ideal for fishing, boating and sail boarding. Horse riding, tours of Cape Nelson Lighthouse, mountain-bike excursions, canoeing, caving, joy flights, abseiling, fishing trips and diving trips are some of the activities which can be enjoyed by visiting families.
