On the southern coast, the region stretches from the SA border east to Port Fairy.
The Region is named for a series of sandstone mountain ranges (themselves named after the Grampian Mountains in Scotland). These ranges are located approximately 240 km north-west of Melbourne, and are to a large extent enclosed within the 168,000 ha Grampians National Park.
The area is a noted rock climbing destination, and it is popular with campers and bushwalkers. Winter and spring are the best times for walking. The most popular walking area for day trippers is the Wonderland area near Halls Gap. In spring the Grampians’ wildflowers are a major attraction.
A bushfire burned out about 50% of the Grampians National Park in January 2006, but within almost no time, the first signs of regeneration were already visible.
Halls Gap is the largest town in the area, providing for the needs of the many visitors to the park. To the east of the park are the larger town of Stawell and the city of Ararat. Various wineries flourish in the area, primarily producing red wine.
To the north of the Grampians are the farming centres of Horsham and Warracknabeal, to the west of which is the Little Desert National Park, which is desert land only in the sense of being agriculturally inhospitable. Native plant and wildlife adapted to the aridity thrive there.
To the south of the Grampians is Hamilton, Australia’s major centre for wool production, the area producing as much as 15% of Australia’s total wool clip.
On the region’s coast the major city is Portland, the oldest European settlement in what is now the state of Victoria, and west of this is the Lower Glenelg National Park with attractions such as the Glenelg River gorge and the Princess Margaret Rose Cave.
