About WANGARATTA

Wangaratta is located on the Ovens and King Rivers. Two creeks also run through the town and there are a number of lagoons, billabongs, and plenty of parkland. It is the northern starting point of the Great Alpine Road. The Pangerang Aboriginal people occupied the area prior to European settlement. The explorers Hume and Hovell were probably the first Europeans in the area in 1824, and the area was settled in the late 1830s, with the township being laid out in 1849.

Some of the attractions for visitors to the area are the local wines, Air World, the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues festival held annually in November, and the Warby Range State Park which has excellent viewing points, picnic spots and a wide variety of birdlife and wildflowers. The bushranger Mad Dog Morgan is buried in the local cemetery.
