About the Wine and High Country Region

The Wine and High Country Region of Victoria is the north-eastern region of the State from around Corowa to the western border of the Kosciuszko National Park in the north, and from Alexandra to Omeo in the south. In addition to the wineries that give the region part of its name, the area is home to some of Australia’s most popular snowfields, such as Mount Buller and Mount Hotham.

Much of the most spectacular mountain country in the region, including the State’s highest point, Mount Bogong, is encompassed by the Alpine National Park, the largest National Park in Victoria.

This area is very popular in summer for bushwalking and mountain biking. In winter, much of the area is accessible on skis. Mount Hotham and Falls Creek are ski resorts inside the national park, while other areas such as the Bogong High Plains and Mount Bogong bring back-country skiing enthusiasts. In months when there is no snow, the area attracts horse-riders, mountain-bikers and from four-wheel-drive enthusiasts.

Further north is Mount Beauty, a launching point for trips to the Falls Creek ski resort and the Bogong High Plains. To this end, there are several ski hire shops, several eateries and a bus company doing daily trips to and from the end of the road at Falls Creek.

On the western side of the Alpine area is Mount Buffalo National Park. Mount Buffalo itself is a plateau atop which are striking granite boulders and rock formations. The highest accessible point is a prominent peak called The Horn, from which visitors can enjoy a 360-degree view.

North of this part of the region, approaching the New South Wales, the country becomes more conducive to agriculture. Farms around Myrtleford produce wine grapes, hops, nuts and berries; Yackandandah is a centre for forestry and dairy farming; and Rutherglen and surrounds are famous for their production of widely praised fortified wines, such as muscat and tokay, as well as other varieties of wine.
