About the Yarra Valley / Dandenong Ranges Region

The Yarra Valley Region is the name given to the area surrounding the Yarra River on the north-eastern outskirts of Melbourne, Victoria.

The river originates in the Yarra Ranges approximately 60 km east of Melbourne and flows towards and into the city of Melbourne and out into Port Phillip Bay. The name Yarra Valley is usually used in reference to the upper regions surrounding the Yarra River and usually does not encompass the lower regions including the city and inner city suburbs.

The Yarra Valley is a popular day-trip and tourist area, partly for the area’s considerable natural beauty but also for the local produce, particularly wines. The Yarra Valley is home to many good quality wineries. The region's relatively cool climate makes it particularly conducive to the production of high-quality chardonnay and pinot noir, as well as the production of premium sparkling wine.

Agriculturally, the region name is mainly applied to the agricultural area east of Melbourne rather than the lower reaches in the suburbs of Melbourne itself, and the upper reaches which are in inaccessible bushland.

To the west of the region is the Bunyip State Park, while further north is the Warburton Trail (more properly, the Lilydale to Warburton Rail Trail), a walking and cycling track that runs a distance of 38 km between Lilydale and Warburton, along the former Warburton Railway Line. Many rare species of plants and animals can be seen by the keen observer along the trail.

Warburton itself is a tourist destination, with picturesque mountain views of the surrounding hills. The township is twenty minutes drive from Mount Donna Buang, which is snow covered in the winter. Restaurants and cafés, river walks, snow-play, and wineries make up the local attractions.

Not far from Warburton is Healesville, well known for the Healesville Sanctuary - a nature park with hundreds of native Australian animals displayed in a semi-open natural setting.
