About Victoria
Spread out a map of Victoria, and you will be amazed at the variety of holiday possibilities packed into a single state.
Right in the middle of the Victoria’s coastline is Melbourne, the cultural capital of Australia, with is impressive colonial architecture, its gardens, theatres, galleries and concert halls. Melbourne hosts over three hundred cultural events every year, and this year’s offerings include the Salvador Dali exhibition, ‘Liquid Desire’ at the National Gallery of Victoria, which is on view till October, and ‘A Day in Pompeii’, with over 250 objects and an immersive 3d theatre at the Melbourne Museum.
Melbourne’s shopping and café precincts are known for their combinations of new and retro, of innovative and unique. Try Chapel St, Lygon St, Brunswick St and Acland St –each comes with their own distinct flavour! To the west of Melbourne, you can cruise down the Great Ocean Rd, ride the world-championship surf at Bells’ beach, see the lighthouse at Airey’s Inlet before passing by the magnificent Twelve Apostles on your way to former whaling towns like Port Fairy. Further inland, you pass through gold rush country and grand old colonial towns like Bendigo and Ballarat. You could spend a day at Sovereign Hill, a living museum of gold rush times, and before either heading further west to the Grampians National Park, or north to the Macedon Ranges, home of Hanging Rock. In the far northwest is the Big Desert Wilderness park, where desert creatures can be seen lurking in the sandhills and dry creek beds. The Park continues right up to the Murray River, which serves as the border between Victorian and NSW. Along the Murray at Mildura or Echuca you can relive the days of the Murray River Paddle steamers and go on a paddle boat cruise on the river. East of Melbourne, the coastline road heads down to the Mornington Peninsula, past olive groves and vineyards and through beautiful sheltered seaside towns like Sorrento and Portsea. On the Bass Strait side of the peninsula is Phillip Island, known for both fairy penguins and the motorcycle grand prix! If you follow this coastline it eventually links up with Ninety Mile Beach, a pristine stretch of coastline that begins at Wilson’s promontory, and is punctuated with small villages, and deserted beaches, and little inlets and coves. It runs alongside Australia’s biggest inland waterway, the freshwater Gippsland Lakes, which are separated from the sea by sand dunes. Inland from the East Coast are the Dandenong Ranges, Melbourne’s mountain retreat, where you can ride Puffing Billy through 24 km of mountain forests, or visit the Healesville Sanctuary to see Australian Native Animals in their natural environment. The Dandenong ranges extend north before they run into the Victorian Alps. All skiers would have heard of ski fields at Mt Hotham and Mt Buller, and the ski-in, ski- out resort at Falls Creek. These are open from June to late September each year, though the Alps can also be seen and enjoyed at other times by keen walkers who are game to try the 655km Alpine Walking track from Walhalla all the way up to the Brindabella Ranges. Tucked in behind the Alps are Victoria’s fertile fruit growing valleys, home to wineries such as Rutherglen and Milawa, fruit growing towns like Shepparton and historic Glenrowan, former home of bushranger Ned Kelly. There is a large variety of accommodation offered in Victoria, from five star ski resorts, through to the top of the market B&B’s offering packages around local festivals, from houseboats in the Murray, to campsites available for trekkers, campers and climbers who want to explore the different National Parks.
